We looked at what I call "Game of Thrones" week for the past few seasons. This seven day period puts the day of the season premiere smack in the middle of the sampled week. The reason for this is that we know people start downloading and paying for HBO NOW before and after the season premiere. Below we can see while revenue is down from last season premiere, downloads are up. What does this mean? My guess is password sharing and/or GoT premiere parties. Average daily revenue for the HBO NOW app during this year's Game of Thrones week is up 48% compared to the daily average this calendar year.
Shopping apps put downloads in their cart
Worldwide downloads of Shopping apps continue to rise, with the biggest jump (31%) coming from 2015 to 2016. In 2018, about 58% of Shopping category downloads stemmed from Android devices. Emerging markets are driving a large chunk of this growth. Looking specifically at India, millions of people are coming online for the first time and getting mobile devices each year. Flipkart, Club Factory and SHEIN all get a substantial portion of their downloads from the Indian market, and these are some of the most downloaded Shopping apps of Q1 2019.
Banking is an unbearably dry topic, except in the UK, where the traditional incumbents are stuck in a pitched battle for survival with a swathe of new app-only “challenger banks.” Without a doubt, the most famous of these is Monzo. Its monthly downloads of the company’s flagship app growing 211% in 12 months and 347% since January 2018.
