News From the NetWorks

Note from the NetWork Chair…

Members of the steering committee as well as other members of the NetWork worked tirelessly to create session proposals for this year’s CHEST Annual Meeting. They created a superb program that should have something of interest for all health-care professionals interested in the care of ventilator-assisted individuals. Our NetWork members have also been active in discussions with members of several interest groups about proposals for reimbursement for respiratory assist devices as these are being considered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services over the next 2 years. Several members of our NetWork are also members of the guideline development team for a statement on the care of patients with neuromuscular disease.

We were shocked and saddened to hear about the sudden death of one of our colleagues and a member of this NetWork’s steering committee, Dr. Venessa Holland. We extend our deepest sympathies to her family, co-workers, and patients. She was a beloved physician in her community and she was known for her holistic care of her patients and her passion for caring for her patients with chronic respiratory failure and neuromuscular disease.

Howard Pantich

I was a junior fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians during my pediatric pulmonary fellowship training. My involvement with the college was minimal during the first few years of my career, but in 1997, I was invited to speak at the CHEST Annual Meeting in a symposium about bronchopulmonary dysplasia. I was amazed to find out how accessible everyone was at the conference and how much that was offered in some way pertained to my practice, even though I am a pediatrician! I became more involved with the college and eventually became a steering committee member of the Pediatric Chest Medicine NetWork and then Chair of the NetWork.

As Chair, I helped to create an interest group in neuromuscular disease that crossed several NetWorks. Through that activity, I developed acquaintances and friendships with colleagues in “adult” medicine that have lasted to this day. Over the ensuing years, I became more involved in the Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation and Neuromuscular Disease NetWork, and I eventually became a member of the steering committee. I am delighted to be part of such a vibrant NetWork, filled with health-care professionals who are passionate about what they do and the patients for whom they care.
