Spring Into Financial Wellness with a Student Debt Letter

Spring is ComingI don’t know about you, but here in the Midwest we’re welcoming spring with wide… open… arms! To the Attigo team, the first day of spring not only means warmer weather is coming, but also that April and financial literacy month are not far behind.

Financial literacy lessons (online like GradReady or classroom based) are an important part of student success programming. They teach students about topics like budgeting, credit, and how to pay for school. One challenge we've often heard though, is how to move beyond a curriculum and apply those lessons to real-world scenarios. That’s where student debt letters come in.

A student debt letter translates annual borrowing into long-term payments. It helps students make the connection between future income and future expenses, and see the impact of interest on total loan cost. Indeed it can be an eye-opening experience, but it's also an opportunity to employ budgeting,  strategic enrollment, and more responsible borrowing.

Debt letters are a valuable tool for any financial literacy program because they have the potential to shape a student’s decisions as they move through school. And that’s exactly why state legislators have passed, and are legislating, laws that require higher education institutions to send annual indebtedness communication.

CurrentCollege Cost Meterly there are 12 states requiring student debt letters, five (CA, OR, TX, VA, WA) are facing looming deadlines for initial compliance. If you’re based in one of these states, and haven't set your plan in place, we're here to help. Our team can get you up and running with College Cost Meter in just a few weeks.

If you’re in a state that doesn't require a debt letter, I encourage you to consider this tool. And, perhaps in honor of financial literacy month take the steps to implement a customized indebtedness communication as part of your overarching student success programming. With College Cost Meter we've made it easy and very affordable.
