Evaluation of Settling Behavior of UltraHealth Hybrid Contact Lenses Fitted on Keratoconic Eyes
By Giancarlo Montani D.Optom, FBCLA, FIACLE

Hybrid lenses, similar to scleral lenses, settle after the initial fit, reducing the apical clearance. The amount of settling as well as the amount of time for the settling to occur varies from patient to patient. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the settling behavior and amount of time needed with UltraHealth hybrid contact lenses on keratoconic eyes. And further, to determine if there is a way to predict the amount of settling based on the first minutes of wear.

  • Twenty eyes with a diagnosis of keratoconus were fit with UltraHealth hybrid contact lenses and apical clearance was measured at insertion, at 15, 30, and 45 minutes, and 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours (see the graph above).
  • The results show that the settling behavior over time of UltraHealth is similar to that of scleral contact lenses with 50% of the settling occurring during the first hour of lens wear and stabilization after 3 hours.
  • The results show that there is a large variation in settling between patients after one hour, with settling ranging between 39.82µm and 80.62µm.
  • It is important to emphasize that final lens must be confirmed after a period of wear.

Tangible Hydra-PEG is a promising new coating technology that should serve to significantly improve the custom contact lens experience. Benchtop tests and early clinical studies point to improvements in wettability, lubricity, deposit resistance, tear film quality, subjective comfort and overall patient preference.

Six Secrets to Smooth
Specialty Lens Scheduling

It’s not a secret that it takes longer to fit a specialty lens than it does to hand out a commodity lens. However, this added investment of time should be neither excessive nor financially burdensome.

On the contrary, when approached smartly, custom lens fittings help establish a saner pace in the eye care practices that embrace them, offering true respite from the typical tailspin that other doctors feel as they rush from one exam room to the next.
