On Our Minds:

New Board Member, Michael Horn, To Make Us Even More Disruptive

A few weeks ago, Michael Horn, co-founder of the Clayton Christensen Institute and co-author of the award-winning book Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools, stepped aside from leading the Clayton Christensen Institute to start new challenges, enter “the arena” and work on the ground with the entrepreneurs shaping the future of education.  We are so excited that he announced last week his decision to join the Education Elements board, based on his belief that our company is among a select group that provides some of the highest quality services available and achieves exemplary results.

Michael Horn has always believed in Education Elements’ vision and work, and has been excited about the results of our school districts. Having Michael Horn on our board is a big addition to Education Elements, and we are thrilled to learn more from him and with him.

One LELA Class Graduates While The Next Cohort Competes For Spots

On October 14th the first cohort of Lexington Education Leadership Awards Fellows gathered together in Washington, DC for a closing Showcase and Celebration. The 10 fellows visited a school, and spent time at the US Department of Education before spending an afternoon working together and with mentors and sharing their visions for personalized learning. According to one fellow, “This was the most meaningful leadership experience of my professional career.”...and “it’s just the beginning of the journey”- Anthony Kim.

But as one door closes, another opens. At the 2015 iNACOL Blended and Online Learning Symposium in Orlando next week, 27 finalists will come together to learn as a group.  While only 10 will ultimately move forward as fellows, the Lexington Institute and Ed Elements are excited to create a learning community for the entire group as each leader will bring a tremendous amount of knowledge to the table.

The Highlight Ecosystem is Getting Bigger and Integrating to it is Getting Faster

We are pleased to announce three new additions to our partner catalog: Academic Merit, Splash Math and OpenEd, as well as the release of our new Integration Development Kit. IDK is available to all of our catalog partners and makes integration easier and faster with single-click login for students and educators into Highlight, standardized file format for integration with any SIS system, free first line customer support for all joint district clients, and NO development fees or per-student SIS import fees. Our newest partners, Academic Merit, SplashMath and OpenEd, have used the IDK to integrate their digital content with Highlight in record time. If you are a current client we recommend you check out all they have to offer. Are you a digital content provider? Visit www.edelements.com/partner-with-us to learn more.

Design Spotlight:

25 Things To Do In Personalized Learning Implementation

Over the past few years our work with districts has evolved as our experience has deepened.  Earlier this year we spent time understanding all the steps a district needs to take, and all the things they need to think about, in order to successfully implement personalized learning.  And we came up with 25 elements that we think need to be in place.

It is with this in mind that we developed our Personalized Learning Implementation Plan which, by appearances, most closely resembles a Bingo Board.  But it’s a bingo board with a twist; we don’t just randomly pick squares to work on with you (like a bingo call randomly draws numbers).  Our Design and Implementation team, through readiness assessment and conversations, helps districts to carefully select their focus squares and areas of need.

You can download a copy of the “board” here and check out the guiding questions on the back.  We encourage you to sit down with your team members and think through “what questions can I answer?”  “who can help me with the ones I can’t answer today?” “what areas are holding me back from moving forward?”  (It feels a little overwhelming, but do it with Bingo chips and it gets a lot more fun).  This is a great place to start your planning for personalized learning or to self-assess your progress.   And if you get stuck? Shoot us an email.  We are happy to help!
