December 2015 Newsletter

On Our Minds:

Happy Birthday...To Us!

We are excited to celebrate our 5th birthday this December. That’s five years of supporting schools and districts as they change what teaching and learning look like. Five years of growing an amazing team and creating a terrific product. Five years of learning, iterating, designing and developing. Five years of getting amazing results. We can’t wait to put on the birthday hats and blow some horns.  Happy birthday to us.

For Group 1 of Fulton Schools It's About to Get Personal

After nearly two years of preparation, Fulton County Schools is starting to see personalized learning take hold in school! Fulton will move to personalized learning for all 96,000 students in 101 schools over the next few years. Education Elements is proud to work with Fulton on their design and implementation process.

Based on a readiness assessment, Fulton schools self-selected into five groups, or “waves” for personalized learning. Education Elements completed the design process with Group 1 schools, which included developing an instructional model, professional development plan, and communications plan. This fall, Group 1 selected their additional devices and they have started to implement their personalized learning instructional models. We were honored to conduct “learning walks” in some of those schools last week and were blown away by the progress they have made! Work with Groups 2 and 3 are underway!

Sunrise in Orlando

Once again Education Elements went all in for the iNACOL Blended and Online Learning Symposium.  Our pre-conference and conference sessions were crowded, exciting and energizing.  Our booth got better each hour as iNACOL attendees added yellow post-its to our sun, answering the question #whyipersonalize.

We loved getting to host and hang out with the 25 Lexington Education Leadership Award Finalists. And our parties?  Well, if you missed them, you missed out.  We had an absolute blast meeting so many people that were so excited about personalized learning. Check out our re-cap here.

Three More Districts and a Lot More Students Are Getting Ready for Personalized Learning

We are pleased to announce a new partnership with Dundee Central School in Dundee, NY serving 750 students. Ed Elements will work with the district team to support personalized learning at the elementary and middle schools.  Work will start in the next few weeks with a planned district launch in Fall 2016.

Spring Branch Independent School District, serving 35,000+ students in Houston, Texas area, is in the process of redesigning their strategic plan according to the needs and resources of their district while maximizing local control.  To support with this process, Education Elements has been selected to provide technical assistance in support of design-thinking, and as an introduction to personalized learning.

In Minnesota LELA Cohort 1 Fellow, Nancy Allen-Mastro, is working with Education Elements to build on the work started in the fellowship and take their device roll-out to a new level - a personalized one!  We are so excited to be continuing our work with them.

Tribute to John Chubb from Anthony Kim

I met John Chubb when he was the Chief Education Officer for Edison Schools. It was in 2007, when Edison started the process of acquiring a company I founded, Provost Systems. Through that process and during my time at Edison, I got to know John and his wife, Angela Chubb, outside of work. Both are passionate educators who want to make a difference for our future. I loved our chats, debates, and battles we fought together. And I cherish the memories of us having drinks talking about solving big problems. John opened up his network to me and got me involved in education in ways I didn’t imagine. He was so giving.

John passed on November 12 of this year. I can still see the big smile on his face, how he enjoyed being with friends and family, delighted in debates about improving the education system, and opened doors for me and many others. Thank you John for being a great friend and letting me learn from you. Your passion and lifelong commitment to education will not be forgotten by any of us here at Education Elements.

Product Spotlight:

Are you a school or district leader?  Are students in your district using multiple digital content providers to enhance their learning experience?  Do you find it difficult to know which schools and classrooms are even using these products?  Do you want to make sure that each school and classroom is putting their software to use?  Check out our new Highlight Leader Dashboard.  It is designed to answer these questions and more.

Monitor Usage | With the new Highlight Leader Dashboard, you can easily see which classrooms, across the entire district, have students who are completing lessons in digital content each week.  It is simple to identify which classrooms are succeeding and where you might want to provide more support.

Drive Adoption + Minimize Wasted Licenses | The Highlight Leader Dashboard also helps to minimize wasted licenses by seeing content provider usage data, for multiple products and schools, all in one place.

Partner Spotlight:

OpenEd.com is the largest online resource library for K-12 teachers. Opened_logo.jpgTeachers can find exactly what they want on OpenEd: they have done the hard work so teachers don’t have to!  OpenEd has organized everything so that teachers can find the standard aligned videos, games, quizzes, homework assignments, and lesson plans they need.

  • OpenEd allows teachers to search by Common Core standards, NGSS, TEKS, subject, grade, keyword, or even their textbook.
  • The videos and games are sorted by effectiveness, so teachers can find just the right resource no matter what subject, topic or standard.
  • Students can take the quizzes (formative assessments) and homework assignments on any computer, tablet or even phone.  The assignments are are automatically graded and presented to teachers in a mastery chart.  OpenEd is particularly excited to have created an "assessment to instruction" loop, where students get videos and games recommended to them based on their quiz performance, automatically.
