IRB Guidance on the Use of Secondary Data
Secondary data are information or specimens about or from a living human that were either originally collected for non-research purposes, or that were collected for research purposes other than a project currently being proposed. NC State's IRB Office has developed a guidance document on understanding the regulations governing the use of secondary data. It is particularly important for PCOM faculty to understand that data they may have collected themselves for non-research purposes, i.e., data not subject to IRB regulations, is considered secondary data when faculty wish to use those data for research purposes. Use of such secondary data for research purposes does require IRB approval.
