NGen publishes 2019-2020 Annual Report

2020 was NGen’s second year of business and the first full year of operations for Canada’s Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster. It was a year that ended with unexpected and exceptional challenges. Nevertheless, it was a year of significant achievements for Next Generation Manufacturing Canada.

By March 31st, 2020, NGen had approved 23 advanced manufacturing and COVID-19 projects with a total project value of $76.8 million and involved 76 organizations across Canada. English version                             Version française



Business Case Study: Advanced Test and Automation, Inc. Canadian Emergency Ventilators Project

Milton and Halton Region based Advanced Test and Automation, Inc. (ATA) is participating in a project funded by NGen. The Canadian Emergency Ventilators (CEV) Project is for providing ventilators for use in challenging COVID-19 triage scenarios. The project is manufacturing the “Winnipeg Ventilator”. As part of this initiative, ATA has converted part of its facility into a clean room and deployed the quality systems appropriate for medical device manufacturing. Learn more_>

Responding to COVID-19: Industry leadership honours

NGen's Jayson Myers is a keynote speaker. When COVID-19 struck in early March, Canadian industry was called upon to join the fight against the pandemic and offer support through the creation of PPE, sanitizers, ventilators and other innovative devices.
Manufacturers’ achievements include developing PPE to protect frontline workers; developing products to assist the sick, to accelerate testing and to protect all Canadians; and developing innovations that will have lasting impact post-pandemic.
Manufacturers and their workforces are among the heroes who have battled the spread of COVID-19, and we are going to recognize them with a virtual gala event.

SONAMI survey for manufacturers

Advancements in technology, markets, production practices, and supply chains place unprecedented pressure on manufacturers to change how they do business. The ongoing COVID-19 crisis has only accelerated the need for change.

The SONAMI network of colleges and one university works with SMEs on cost-shared applied research projects. SONAMI’s assist manufacturers to develop, test, and adopt new technologies, processes, and products by providing access to state-of-the-art applied research capabilities, equipment and facilities.

The 15-minute survey which will enable us to better understand the needs of small and medium-sized manufacturers and the challenges they face. The results will inform future investments and expansion of the network. Take the survey.

SCAN Health design competition 2020!

The competition focuses on a challenge that health systems globally are facing amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The pandemic has highlighted significant supply chain challenges as provincial health systems across Canada struggle to manage the impact and spread of the coronavirus. Eastern Health has identified the business challenge of determining product equivalency for personal protective equipment (PPE).
Sourcing PPE has been a significant challenge as every health system in the world is focused on procuring needed equipment to protect their health workforce. The design challenge invites teams to respond with a solution that will enable health systems to determine equivalency of product specifications to achieve reliable, accurate and standardized product data in an efficient and effective manner to overcome supply shortages. Association for Manufacturing Excellence 2020 International Conference

The Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) is an international network of practitioners dedicated to promoting and showcasing best practices in operational excellence. AME will hold its 36th Annual International Conference on Oct. 27 to 29, 2020. It will feature a completely virtual program that will be focused on the theme Energize Your Journey.  Conference information is available at
The 2020 International Conference program is being designed to support AME’s mission of Share, Learn and Grow.   In addition to a wide variety of virtual workshops, best practice presentations, keynotes, and special sessions,   the conference  will  offer virtual plant tour opportunities to conference participants. These are planned for October 28 and 29 from 12:30 to 2:00 pm ET. Three virtual tours are planned each day. 
AME is offering NGen members an opportunity to showcase their facility by participating as a host site in the plant tours part of its conference program. The benefits for host facilities include:

  • Market exposure: AME’s marketing coverage is comprehensive, and participation will be widely promoted internationally.
  • Participant exposure: Conference registrants will come from many countries. Host companies will gain wide international exposure and Note that host companies will be given a list of registrants well ahead of time for review. Any person on the list whom you would prefer not to have join the virtual tour for whatever reason (e.g., a competitor) will be removed from the planned tour group.
  • Best practice sharing: AME’s Share, Learn and Grow philosophy is built into its plant tour program through a written feedback process. Visitors record and leave with the host company their takeaways as well as opportunities for improvement they have identified during the
  • A positive experience for employees: Employees will have an opportunity to interact with visitors during the virtual tour and demonstrate their proficiency and pride in their workplaces.
  • AME’s Lean Sensei program application: Each host site will have an opportunity to employ this proprietary self-assessment performance evaluation tool in their
  • Conference passes and discounts: All confirmed tour sites receive one free conference pass valued at US$1,100. Tour sites can purchase additional conference passes for 25% off the list price.  All conference passes will include a one year AME individual membership.  This membership will entitle the member to access to all AME events as a full member.
