Hey there,

Happy Friday 😎

Here's the latest app news delivered to your inbox. If you missed last week's action packed newsletter, you can check that out here.

Mobile Signal

Nike (NKE) is on pace to grow MAUs of its mobile app portfolio 56% YoY in the 2nd quarter. It's on pace to grow DAUs by even more at 75% YoY, meaning engagement for Nike's mobile properties is growing.

App Acquisitions

Just Eat Takeaway is acquiring Grubhub for $7.3 billion. Even if Uber had been able to acquire Grubhub, Uber Eats + Grubhub in the US would still be slightly smaller than DoorDash in the US from the perspective of mobile app active users and downloads over the past six months.

Chegg acquired Mathway for $100 million. Over the past 365 days, Mathway has generated $5.1 million via IAP revenue for its subscription learning services.

The Slowpening

OpenTable, a mobile app owned by Booking Holdings, is used to reserve tables at restaurants. Remember that? Going out to eat and sitting there, maybe staying awhile. What a rush that would be these days. Anywho, around the world people are slowly seeing where they can get a table outside and try a slice of the beforetimes. Behind the US, Germany makes up the second most downloads For OpenTable over the past 60 days. And yes, that big spike in February is Valentine's Day.

HBO Maxed out

Its daily download record that is. HBO Max launched on May 27th but instead of launching a new app, it upgraded the HBO NOW app into Max. On May 31st, the app hit its most daily downloads ever (inclusive of HBO NOW lifetime) at 225k. Since launch, HBO Max has been downloaded 1.8 million times. This is behind the launch of Quibi, but as stated earlier, many users already had the app. So these downloads are very likely to be entirely new users to the HBO ecosystem.
