Hey there,

Happy Friday 😎

Here's the latest app news delivered to your inbox. If you missed last week's action packed newsletter, you can check that out here.

Mobile Signal

Starbucks (SBUX) is on pace to grow global daily active users of its mobile app 36% YoY in 2Q20.

App Acquisitions

Maple Media acquired weather app, NOAA Hi-Def Radar, from E.W. Scripps Co. Even though the app launched in 2011, it did not start ranking in the Weather category until February of this year.

Built in audiences are always helpful

I didn't include Twitch in this because the visual would have only given you a good view of Twitch's data and squished these apps down to make them look like three sticks of gum stacked on top of each other. Twitch is the leader in the clubhouse though, with 25.4 million sessions just yesterday. Keep in mind, Facebook's streaming app (launched globally on 4/20) is currently only available for Android users. The iOS version is "coming soon."

Zynn city

You probably noticed Zynn is the #1 app in the US App Store. 99% of its downloads are from the US. It's a short form social video app similar to TikTok but it rewards users monetarily for watching videos and inviting friends to join the app. This is what they call a "growth hack" in the biz. Non-organic growth isn't as sticky but maybe this app is just meant to be a distraction from TikTok, financed by the deep pockets of Tencent (a top competitor to Bytedance). Turner Novak of Gelt VC provides some research and insight into the companies behind Zynn. He uses a competitor's store rank data but we won't shame him too hard for it. Zynn could very well be trying to be legitimate and has determined giving away money is its key to growth. If so, they will likely stop the monetary rewards once they hit their target number of users or retention or some other metric. Either way, I opened the app up and on its surface, it is identical to TikTok in its format and on screen navigation icons.
