Airlines Implement New Safety Protocol, with the First Carrier Announcing Passenger Masks Required

Tuesday, April 28, 2020

Amid COVID-19, flying etiquette is changing, as airlines are now requiring flight attendants and passengers to wear homemade or commercial face masks.

Beginning May 4, JetBlue will require a face make or covering during check-in, boarding, duration of flight, and deplaning.

United Airlines has implemented new safety protocols:
  • All on-duty flight attendants to wear a face mask or covering.
  • Advanced seat selection for passengers has been restricted for adjacent seats.
  • Self-service kiosks have been disabled, while passengers will be separated by plexiglass at the service counters.

Beginning Friday, May 1, AA will be requiring all flight attendants to wear mask on all flights. While passengers will be distributed face masks and sanitizer.

Delta Airlines is requiring all employees, who cannot remain six-feet apart from another human, to wear a face mask or covering until June 30. Passengers are "strongly encouraged" to wear face masks and they will be supplied at a variety of touch points at the airport.
