NetWork News

Note from the Practice Operations NetWork Chair…

On behalf of the entire NetWork Steering Committee, we would like to extend thanks to all of the front-line HCPs for stepping up in this time of global crisis. HCPs will never be viewed the same again. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the fellow souls who have passed away during this crisis. May they ever rest in peace.

I would also like to acknowledge and appreciate the endless dedication, commitment, and hard work of all the NetWork Steering Committee members for their active participation in enhancing and promoting the role of Practice Operations.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to challenge us globally, we as HCPs are responsible for taking undiminished care of our ailing patients but, at the same time, have an obligation to protect our colleagues and ourselves. During this unfortunate and backbreaking time, telehealth has emerged as an incredibly powerful tool. Starting March 6, 2020, and for the duration of the COVID-19 public health emergency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid will make payments for professional services furnished to beneficiaries in all areas of the country in all health-care settings. Fortunately, other commercial payers have followed suit and many more will likely move forward in this direction.

Our goal will be to keep the CHEST membership informed about the latest developments regarding telehealth and still ensure that other aspects of practice management and administration are appropriately and effectively addressed.

Telehealth seems like the perfect answer in this arduous situation, but it will have a learning curve as we sort out the nuances associated with it, so we encourage all CHEST members to come forward with all their ideas, suggestions, and feedback and help us fight this battle.

Learning opportunities and CHEST Live Learning courses

CHEST and the American Thoracic Society have partnered to form a Joint Clinical Practice Committee. The mission of this group is to monitor, review, comment on, and educate the membership of both societies on coding, billing, and regulatory compliance issues that impact pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. We encourage CHEST members to utilize this resource to its fullest potential, attend the CHEST Annual Meeting 2020 in Chicago, IL, and explore more educational opportunities (including CHEST Live Learning courses), which are found in the CHEST Store.

Get to know your leadership!

I have served CHEST in multifarious ways during the last many years and have been an avid advocate for CHEST and the CHEST Foundation. Being involved with this NetWork has been a very humbling experience due to the amount of education and learning that we have been able to furnish to CHEST members, because most HCPs are not well equipped with the necessary knowledge for practice management and administration. Never would I have thought of a global challenge of this magnitude in a system that has been plagued by the burnout. We together as a team will make sure that we step up to this challenge and provide all the resources and work in collaboration with all of the NetWork. History will remember you as a hero.  Please do not hesitate to contact me directly for any questions or concerns.

Salim Surani, MD, MSc, FCCP
Chair, Practice Operations NetWork

I am an early career clinician and educator, and I have been extremely fortunate to be involved with CHEST in a leadership role. After completing my fellowship in 2014, I became very astutely involved with the Practice Operations NetWork and, since then, have contributed in various ways at innumerable levels with a goal to help CHEST members at large. I have learned immensely by attending CHEST meetings and workshops and have translated that education into my clinical practice. I am eternally grateful to CHEST for providing me this fascinating experience and for helping me grow as a person and as a professional who is very involved in private as well as academic practice. Lastly, I hope that I can continue to strive to further the vision of CHEST. In this challenging time, please feel free to let us know if we can do anything to ease out the stress and challenges you all may be facing. Once again, our hats off to all of you for what you do for CHEST, our patients, and the community.
