NetWork News

Note from the Transplant NetWork Chair…

It has been a great year for our NetWork. We have engaged, talented members who are excited about education, clinical innovations, and research. This focus has led to diverse projects and programming. We recently finalized the scientific program for CHEST Annual Meeting 2020, which has a steady stream of transplant-related content. Next, we will choose our accepted research abstracts, cases, and CHEST Experience sessions. We are also reviewing suggestions and ideas for our featured NetWork speaker this year.

We received a recent email from CHEST that only 13% of our FCCP members are women. Looking at our NetWork members, I was struck that the FCCP designation was a bit lower than I expected overall. Members without an FCCP designation can do most things that fellows can do; however, to apply for a leadership position (eg, NetWork Vice-Chair, NetWork Committee Chair) you need to have applied for FCCP. Eligible applicants need to submit two letters of recommendations, CVs, and the application fee. I would love to see more of our members apply for and be honored with an FCCP designation at the CHEST Annual Meeting 2020.

In other news, our NetWork-sponsored donor quality project was accepted as an oral presentation (phase 1 project) and a mini-oral presentation (phase 2 project) at the meeting of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. Please look for our two forthcoming abstracts in the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. Disappointingly, due to obvious infection risks in the current pandemic environment, the conference was cancelled. We hope to have manuscripts out in the next year to share with our Transplant NetWork members. CHEST member Kelly Pennington, MD, also published a CHEST-sponsored antifungal prophylaxis in lung transplantation practice survey. See the results here

I am a respiratory therapist with more than 25 years of experience specializing in adult critical care. I work at Cleveland Clinic and serve as the Education Coordinator for the Respiratory Therapy Department in the Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute. Our patient population centers on new cardiac cases, heart and lung transplants, and mechanical circulatory support. I became involved in the Transplant NetWork Steering Committee after joining CHEST, looking for more networking opportunities and resources. I’m proud to say that I am the first respiratory therapist on the Transplant NetWork and look forward to engaging other respiratory therapists to get involved.
