Note from the Disaster Response and Global Health NetWork Chair…

The newly branded Disaster Response and Global Health NetWork began its transformation into the global arena going into the CHEST Annual Meeting 2019. We also enjoyed our collaboration with the Palliative and End-of-Life Care NetWork, both in a shared presentation at Congress and in back-to-back business meetings for the convenience of our members.

Our NetWork is at the forefront of response to COVID-19, which has dramatically increased the work of our NetWork:

  • Our NetWork Vice-Chair, Ryan Maves, MD, FCCP, is the lead author on our forthcoming paper with our sister group, the Task Force on Mass Critical Care, chaired by Jeff Dichter, MD, FCCP. “Triage of scarce critical care resources in COVID-19: an implementation guide for regional allocation” has been accepted for publication in the journal CHEST®.
  • Stella Ogake, MD, has become CHEST’s lead on Twitter, with input from Dave Ferraro, MD, FCCP (monitoring US governmental agencies); Lisa Burry, PharmD, FCCP (monitoring other professional organizations; Michael Tripp, MD, FCCP (monitoring international organizations); and NetWork member Aloke Chakravarti, MD, FCCP (monitoring academic institutions).
  • Ryan Maves, MD, FCCP, with Vikram Mukherjee, MD, MBBS, prepared for posting a summary paper titled "Management of Patients With COVID-19 Infection."
  • Please visit CHEST’s COVID-19 webpage for more information, and do reach out to Ryan or me for ideas or interest.

A big thanks to Dr. MJ Reed for her dedicated leadership as the NetWork Chair during the past 2 years. MJ not only led the transformation of our NetWork into global health but personally has displayed that fervor for teaching critical care across the globe. She is a tough act to follow, and we are all grateful for her dedicated service.

I am actually returning to the role as NetWork Chair, a position I held from 2007 to 2009. As a career US Army doctor and medicine intensivist, I transitioned to Veterans Affairs in Vermont in 2003 where I was Chief of Medicine until 2 years ago. I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the relief efforts for the Pentagon attack on 9/11, the Haiti earthquake in 2010 (photo above), and resource-poor critical care in Tanzania and elsewhere. It’s these experiences, coupled with many more of our NetWork’s members, that will both fulfill our members’ interests in this field and expand our role and position within CHEST and its growing global audience.

James Geiling, MD, MPH, FCCP
Chair, Disaster and Global Health NetWork
