Note from the Home Mechanical Ventilation and Neuromuscular Disease NetWork Chair…

Our committee is growing and changing! We have been granted a second position for a fellow-in-training member to join our committee. This will allow us to attract emerging talent and engage new members at the beginning of their careers. We will also have some upcoming vacancies as members rotate off the committee, as well as a call for nominations for a new Vice-Chair of our NetWork. Please nominate colleagues and friends to join us when the call is announced in mid-March.

Selection of a recipient for this year’s Margaret Pfrommer Endowed Lecture Award in Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation is also underway. Several excellent and deserving candidates have been nominated and have been voted upon by the steering committee, which puts forward its recommendation to the CHEST Awards Committee for vetting. The award is generously supported by the International Ventilator Users Network (IVUN) of Post-Polio Health International and the CHEST Foundation. It is awarded to a clinician, ventilator-dependent professional, or advocate who has advanced the area of mechanical ventilation and has fostered partnerships between physicians and patients.

Finally, planning for the upcoming CHEST Annual Meeting is well underway and the program is being finalized. Our NetWork will be well represented with many of our submitted sessions accepted. Submitters of accepted sessions will be notified in mid-March. Mark your calendars for CHEST 2020 in Chicago.

My involvement with CHEST began in 2016, I was invited to speak at the CHEST Annual Meeting as the Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation and Neuromuscular Disease NetWork Featured Speaker. I was amazed to find out how warm and supportive everyone was at the conference and how much offered in some way pertained to my practice! Since that moment, I became more involved with the college and eventually became a NetWork committee member of the Home-Based Mechanical Ventilation and Neuromuscular Disease NetWork, then Vice-Chair, and now Chair of the NetWork. I am delighted to be part of such a robust and growing NetWork, filled with health-care professionals who are passionate about what they do and the patients for whom they care.
