Mobile Signal

Best Buy (BBY) is expected to report Q3 earnings on November 26. Sessions of its portfolio of mobile apps are up 19% YoY and 2.2% QoQ. New installs are up 10.4% YoY and 19.5% QoQ.

App Acquisitions

PayPal is purchasing Honey for $4 billion. The iOS mobile app has been installed 2.6 million times on iOS since launch in November 2018. DAUs have been steadily increasing since the start of this month as holiday shopping gets underway. The app is still in "early access" on Google Play.

There's water in the basement and the pilot light is out

When Fortnite launched on mobile in March 2018, it was all the rage. At the time, I believe it was actually classified as "lit". Many battle royale games followed and the ones that had already launched were suddenly downloaded en masse from gamers craving more different versions of the genre. We combined the top 5 Battle Royale games to determine the genre's trend lines; Fortnite, PUBG, Free Fire, Knives Out and Rules of Survival. Since January, new installs and gamer sessions have trended downward, to the tune of -39% and -18% respectively, on a monthly basis.

A prescription for saving money

Not that there's a ton of competition in the Medical category on the app stores, but GoodRx has been ranked #1 more than 95% of the time in the category on both iOS and Google Play, for years. Its mobile app launched in 2011 but since November 2018, MAUs have been on a tear! For those unaware, GoodRx is like a mix of GasBuddy and Trivago for pharmacies. It details pricing of medications at pharmacies all around you, but also notifies you of coupons that exist. The company makes money from referral fees, advertising, and selling its technology to PBMs.
